Selected Moving-Image Works, 2013–2026
This selection brings together work created between 2013 and 2026 and reflects the development of my practice across documentary, experimental video, animation, and database cinema. The projects vary widely in form and subject, but together they show a continuing interest in how stories can emerge through research, memory, observation, archival material, programming, and collaboration. Seen together, the works trace a shift from more experimental and nonlinear approaches toward longer-form documentary practice, while retaining an interest in structure, subjectivity, and the relationship between personal experience and larger social histories.

Living on Methadone

Synopsis:
Living on Methadone follows people navigating opioid addiction and recovery through methadone treatment, bringing their experiences into conversation with clinicians, researchers, counselors, historians, and policymakers. Developed through several years of research and filming across multiple states, the film looks at recovery not as a simple progression, but as a complicated experience shaped by stigma, policy, family, access to care, and the struggle to rebuild a life. The film combines observational documentary with more poetic and constructed visual approaches.

Ageless Wonders

In Ageless Wonders, elderly individuals from the Black community take part in Vicente Rondon’s negative photography workshop, a program within the Senior Program at CAO of WNY, Inc., a leading nonprofit organization in Western New York. More than just a lesson in large-format photography, the workshop becomes a space for profound conversations about life, memory, and personal history. Through their evocative portraits, participants rediscover their voices and share their untold stories.

Fight for Good

Filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic, Fight for Good follows three women working in healthcare as they confront the unequal impact of the pandemic on communities of color. Through interviews and observational footage, the documentary connects their personal and professional experiences to larger questions of healthcare access, racial disparity, community responsibility, and resilience.

The Price of Oil

Synopsis:
Created in response to Frederic Rzewski’s composition The Price of Oil, this experimental video uses more than 8,000 still images assembled through stop-motion, archival material, and computer-based processes. Images drawn from newspapers and magazines connect oil to histories of labor, environmental disaster, war, political conflict, and loss, using the archive to question how historical narratives are constructed and remembered. The work was created in collaboration with animator Maryam Muliaee.
Private Nostalgia

"Private Nostalgia" intricately weaves together elements of database video and non-linear storytelling. Mehrvarz has curated an expansive selection of clips from a personal archive, encompassing around 140 videos that span a wide spectrum of content, from global historical and political incidents to intimate glimpses into the artist's family life.

A Spark of Hope in the Past

Synopsis:
Filmed over four days in Tehran in 2009, the documentary follows the final week of an Iranian couple preparing to leave the country permanently. The footage was originally recorded without the intention of making a film and was revisited several years later, after the filmmaker had himself left Iran. With very little dialogue, the film approaches migration through place, memory, departure, and the experience of looking back at a home that has been left behind.

Wistful Affection for the Past

An early experiment in programming, animated text, archival footage, sound, and nonlinear composition. Influenced by Vilém Flusser’s writing on text and sequential thought, the work breaks apart conventional linear narration by layering contrasting visual and textual elements, allowing multiple readings of historical events to coexist rather than resolving them into a single narrative.
